Nigerian President Tinubu Discusses Terrorism and Strengthens Ties During UK State Visit
Nigerian President Highlights Terrorism Challenge in UK Meeting
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu embarked on a historic state visit to the United Kingdom, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader in 37 years. During his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Tinubu stated that Nigeria is challenged by terrorism, noting that neither Nigeria nor Britain is immune to its threat. This visit followed a suspected suicide bombing in northeast Nigeria that killed at least 23 people, highlighting the ongoing jihadist insurgency that has plagued the Western African nation since 2009.
UK and Nigeria Bolster Partnership with Key Deals
During the state visit, both countries announced strengthened cooperation, including a significant trade deal. British Steel secured a 90 million dollar contract for port redevelopments in Nigeria, one of its largest export orders ever. Additionally, a new partnership was announced to expedite the return of visa overstayers and failed asylum seekers. This agreement means that Britain will no longer need to await emergency travel documents from Nigeria to deport individuals. The two nations have maintained strong historical ties as key partners in trade, aid, and defense, with a substantial Nigerian diaspora residing in London.
