Madagascar President Orders Lie Detector Tests for Ministerial Candidates
Unprecedented Anti-Corruption Measure
Madagascar's military leader and president, Michael Randrianirina, announced on Thursday that anyone applying to become a minister in the new government will be subjected to lie detector tests. This move aims to root out corruption and is an unprecedented vetting measure. President Randrianirina stated that the country has acquired a polygraph machine and a specialist to vet candidates. He emphasized, "We will know who is corrupt and who can help us."
Integrity Standards and Interview Process
Randrianirina further added that he is not looking for someone 100% clean, but at least 60% clean. Candidates who fail the polygraph test will not proceed to an interview with the president and prime minister. This initiative follows Randrianirina's decision last week to fire his entire cabinet and appoint a new prime minister. The military leader, who seized power in an October coup after weeks of youth-led protests over poverty and lack of opportunity, has promised to hold elections within two years.
