IMO Condemns Iran's Maritime Attacks, Resolution Backed by Over 100 Nations
IMO Strongly Condemns Iran's Maritime Aggressions
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations maritime watchdog, passed a landmark resolution in an extraordinary session in London, strongly condemning Iran's attacks on vessels and its attempted closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Co-sponsored by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and supported by over 115 member states, the resolution achieved a record level of backing in IMO history. The IMO warned that such actions pose a grave danger to life, particularly for seafarers, and present a serious risk to the marine environment.
India's Stance on 'Unacceptable' Attacks and Humanitarian Corridor Initiative
India was among the key supporters, co-sponsoring the draft declaration. This aligns with India's prior stance at the UN Security Council, where it backed a similar condemnation of Iran's actions. Vikram Doraiswami, India's envoy to the UK, expressed deep concern over escalating attacks in West Asia, which have killed seven seafarers, including three Indians, and left one missing. India termed these attacks as 'unacceptable'. The IMO Council also encouraged the establishment of a framework, such as a Safe Maritime Corridor, to facilitate the safe evacuation of merchant ships from high-risk areas.
Reservations Expressed During Resolution Passage
Although the resolution eventually passed with record backing from 92 member states, the Council noted that the wording did not fully reflect the diverse perspectives of all members. Several delegations raised concerns that the draft declaration lacked balance, inclusivity, and constructiveness. China, in particular, led the charge, stating that the motion primarily focused on condemning one party, Iran, without adequately addressing the root causes of the conflict.
