Putin Envoy Warns EU Faces 'Energy Price Tsunami'
EU Warned of Impending 'Energy Price Tsunami'
Kirill Dmitriev, a Kremlin envoy, has warned that the European Union (EU) is about to be hit by an 'oil and gas price tsunami' due to its rejection of Russian energy. He criticized the EU's stance as 'stubborn stupidity' and claimed the looming disaster stems from the 'stubborn strategic stupidity of Russophobes such as [European Commission President] Ursula [von der Leyen] and [EU foreign policy chief] Kaja [Kallas],' who rejected reliable and cost-effective Russian energy. Dmitriev reiterated Moscow's long-standing assertion that it remains a dependable supplier.
Middle East Conflict and Russian Energy Supply Instability
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has caused extreme volatility in global energy markets. Gas prices have spiked by approximately 70% since March 1, and oil prices have climbed above $110 per barrel due to disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The EU has reduced its imports of Russian energy since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 and subsequent sanctions. Attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022 led to a surge in gas prices. Russia has recently accused Kiev of escalating attacks on the TurkStream pipeline, warning that such incidents could worsen the current energy shock.
