Japan Establishes New JIS for AI Utilization and IT Governance Evaluation
New Standards for AI Implementation and IT Governance Assessment
The Japan Standards Association issued three new Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) on February 20, 2026, concerning the effective utilization of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the evaluation of IT governance. These standards were developed in response to the increasing integration of IT as a foundation for DX (Digital Transformation) and business innovation, as well as the rapid adoption of AI technologies, including generative AI, in modern society.
Providing Guidelines and Evaluation Criteria for Organizational Management
The newly established JIS emphasize the importance of appropriate guidance, evaluation, and supervision by management, as well as inter-organizational relationships, in the adoption of advanced and autonomous AI technologies. They also specify that ethical considerations and non-discrimination are essential when utilizing AI. Notably, these standards refresh the basic principles of IT governance for the first time in 11 years since the establishment of JIS Q 38500 in 2015, and introduce new guidelines for decision-making during AI implementation and objective criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of IT utilization.
