Opposition Leader Grills PM Starmer on Discussions with Mandelson over Epstein Files
Mandelson Appointment Controversy and PM's Evasion
Conservative Leader Kemi Badenoch grilled Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer about whether he personally spoke to Peter Mandelson regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein before Mandelson was appointed as the US ambassador. Starmer avoided a direct answer, acknowledging that the appointment process was 'not strong enough' and apologizing to the victims of Epstein. He noted that the process had been reviewed by an independent advisor, confirming that the relevant procedures for a political appointee were followed.
Criticism of Opposition Leader's Judgment and Islamophobia Accusations
Starmer countered Badenoch's questions by criticizing her 'gross error of judgment' for calling for the UK to join a war in Iran without considering the consequences. He also attacked the Shadow Justice Secretary, appointed by Badenoch, for making Islamophobic remarks. Starmer highlighted comments from the Shadow Justice Secretary describing public prayers by Muslims, including the Mayor of London, as an 'act of domination' straight from the 'Islamist playbook'. Starmer stated that if similar comments were made in his party, the individual would be removed.
PM's Leadership and Blame-Shifting Criticized
Badenoch continued to press Starmer, accusing him of failing to answer directly and demonstrating a lack of leadership. She asserted that Starmer claims to be a serious leader but 'doesn't do the work,' outsourcing decisions and blaming others when things go wrong, including the vetting process, the chief of staff, and the cabinet secretary. Badenoch questioned why Starmer believed Mandelson over vetting documents, especially given Mandelson had been fired twice for dishonesty. She concluded by stating that if Starmer cannot be straight with the House on such a simple matter, he cannot be trusted on anything.
