Panama Accused of Missing Arbitration Deadline and Silencing Press
A subsidiary of Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison, Panama Ports Company (PPC), has accused Panama of failing to meet a deadline for international arbitration initiated by the company. PPC confirmed its offices had earlier been raided by alleged “armed security forces”. On Tuesday, PPC also criticized authorities for silencing the country’s press and disregarding the rule of law, continuing to portray the Central American nation as a risk to foreign investors following the seizure of its two terminals.
Warning to Foreign Investors Amid Terminal Seizure
PPC emphasized that Panama's actions highlight potential risks for foreign investors. The company pointed out that a series of incidents suggest the Panamanian authorities are not adhering to international standards and commitments. This situation is likely to escalate concerns regarding the investment climate in Panama.
