Report: AI Uses News Content Without Compensation, Harms Media Revenue
AI's Unauthorized Use of News Content
A Canadian research report indicates that artificial intelligence (AI) systems heavily rely on information produced by the news industry without offering appropriate compensation or source attribution. The study, conducted by McGill University's Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy, tested major AI models including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok using 2,267 Canadian news articles.
Escalating Economic Harm to the Media Industry
The research found that when querying AI training data for information on Canadian news events, approximately 82% of responses did not include source attribution. Moreover, when AI platforms were asked about specific articles with web access enabled, they often provided substantial portions of the original article in their replies, making it unnecessary for users to visit the original news source. This significantly reduces the need for users to browse original news, potentially leading to decreased traffic and revenue for news media. The report concludes that these AI systems "accelerate the economic collapse of the news industry they rely on."
