Trump Claims 'Talking' to Iran, Iran Denies Seeking Truce Amid Escalating Conflict
Trump's Claims of Ongoing Talks with Iran
U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is in discussions with Iran, but added that Tehran was not ready for a deal to end the war, which has now entered its third week. Trump claimed that Iran 'wants to negotiate badly' but expressed uncertainty about who they would be dealing with, as most of the Iranian leadership has been killed. This remark comes as the conflict continues, involving U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Iran's Rejection of Negotiation Offers
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had previously denied any talks with the U.S. were taking place. In an interview with CBS, Araghchi stated, "We don’t see any reason why we should talk with Americans because we were talking with them when they decided to attack us." He noted there is 'no good experience talking with Americans'. These contrasting statements suggest both sides are digging in for an extended conflict. The widening war has so far killed more than 2,000 people, mostly in Iran, and created the biggest ever oil supply disruption as maritime traffic has halted in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil is transported.
