Trump Hints at China Visit Delay, Pushes for Hormuz Strait Security Cooperation
Trump Considers Delaying China Visit Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
US President Donald Trump has threatened to delay his visit to China, originally scheduled for March 31, 2026. This comes after the US president asked Beijing to send ships to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Trump emphasized that China receives approximately 90% of its oil through the Strait, highlighting the nation's vested interest in the region's security.
Allies Respond to Call for Hormuz Strait Security Assistance
The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed for a third straight week following strikes against Iran. Trump pointed out that Iran's actions were in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes against Tehran. He also sought assistance from allies including France, Japan, South Korea, and Britain, but none have confirmed their compliance. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian called on all parties to immediately cease military operations and prevent further escalation. Kaja Kallas, Estonian Prime Minister and the European Union's foreign policy chief, stated that member states must first discuss their involvement. Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized that diplomatic efforts to calm the situation are essential and a maritime security operation is not currently being considered.
