Chuncheon City Strengthens Support for International Students and Foreign Residents
Growing Number of Foreign Workers and International Students in Chuncheon
Chuncheon City has been actively recruiting foreign workers, leading to a steady increase in registered foreign residents. The number of registered foreigners in Chuncheon City grew from 3,726 in 2021 to 5,052 in 2024, an increase of over 1,300 in just three years. Notably, international students account for 52.1% of all registered foreigners, contributing to the region's labor shortage alleviation and economic revitalization. Individuals like Reski Hanesty Iji, an international student from Indonesia, are attracted to Korea's higher salaries, safe environment, and student support programs, benefiting local companies in Chuncheon.
Enhanced Foreigner Policies and Settlement Support Plans
Chuncheon City is implementing various policies to help international students settle stably and develop into skilled professionals. Last year, the city established an International Cooperation Division to strengthen its foreign policies. It is also collaborating with local universities to expand majors that can lead to professional employment visas for students. Furthermore, the city is considering establishing a Foreigner Support Center to provide comprehensive assistance, including visa, employment, and general living support, ensuring students can remain and thrive in the region after graduation. This initiative aims to foster an environment where foreign residents can lead fulfilling lives as integral members of the community.
Challenges in Expanding Settlement Support Infrastructure
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Gangwon Province currently lacks sufficient industrial infrastructure to accommodate professional employment visas, often making it difficult for international students to stay in the region after graduation. Additionally, students often have to navigate complex information regarding their residency status and employment opportunities independently, highlighting the need for a dedicated organization to provide systematic support. Chuncheon City plans to further expand its industrial base and enhance practical settlement support, including visa and employment counseling and cultural adaptation programs, to ensure foreign talent can work and live stably in the region.
