Middle East War Escalates: Iran Attacks UAE Oil Port, Over 3,000 Casualties
Fujairah Oil Export Terminal Hit and Operations Halted
The Fujairah oil export terminal in the United Arab Emirates was targeted by an Iranian drone attack. Although Fujairah port authorities intercepted one drone, the resulting debris caused a fire. Some loading operations were temporarily suspended but have since resumed after the fire was extinguished. The Fujairah port is a critical facility that processes approximately 1.0 to 1.5 million barrels of crude oil daily. Its strategic location outside the Strait of Hormuz and direct connection via oil pipeline to Abu Dhabi makes it one of the few alternative routes to bypass a potential Iranian blockade. A disruption to this alternative route could severely impact the global oil market.
Iran's Retaliatory Attacks and Rising Casualties
This attack occurred shortly after Iran warned of targeting energy infrastructure linked to the US, in retaliation for the Kharg Island bombing. Both oil refineries in northern Iraq and the radar system at Kuwait International Airport were also attacked. Iran has issued evacuation warnings to residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi ports, raising concerns about further aerial assaults. Meanwhile, the conflict has resulted in over 3,000 casualties across the Middle East. Notably, more than 2,400 military personnel and civilians have died in Iran due to intensive US airstrikes, and over 800 casualties have been reported in Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah are engaged in clashes. The WHO has issued a statement urging an end to attacks on medical facilities.
