Israel has been carrying out an air campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon for almost two weeks. Reports indicate that Israel is now preparing for a massive ground invasion to dismantle Hezbollah's war arsenal. The main targets are the south of Lebanon, from where Hezbollah has launched rocket attacks against Israel for years, and the southern suburbs of Beirut, where many Hezbollah leaders are based.
The Mission to Dismantle Hezbollah and French Proposals
Hezbollah has been a frequent target for Israel, including in the 2006 war and following the Hamas-led attacks of October 7th, 2023. An intricate Israeli operation in 2024, involving exploding pagers, targeted Hezbollah leaders, killing and maiming an estimated 1,500. Danny Danon, Israel's Ambassador to the U.N., stated that the Lebanese government is powerless to stop Hezbollah, and Israel will continue its actions to prevent rocket attacks on its communities.
Meanwhile, the French government, which has long-standing ties to Lebanon, is reportedly proposing a deal that might end the conflict. This deal would include the unprecedented move of Lebanon recognizing Israel.
