Iran's Tehran Fuel Storage Tank Attack Raises 'Black Rain' Concerns
Tehran Fuel Storage Tank Attacked, Causing Environmental Pollution
One of Tehran's fuel storage tanks in Iran was attacked last night, resulting in a large fire and an enormous column of black smoke that covered the sky. The smoke continued into the next day, raising serious concerns about environmental pollution, including 'black rain'. Pir Hossein Koulivand, Head of Iran's Red Crescent Society, stated that facilities in the southern and eastern parts of the city were also targeted and completely destroyed.
Health Risks from Pollutants Warned by Experts
Professor Peter Adams of Carnegie Mellon University explained that fine particulate matter and soot from such fires increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular deaths. He also warned that substances like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a cancer risk. Christian Lindmeier, Spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO), also emphasized that black rain and acidic rain could pose a danger to the population, particularly affecting respiratory health. The acidity concerns, stemming from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, are especially severe given the high concentrations.
