Philippines Experiences Cold Snap, Lowest Temperatures Recorded in Benguet
Philippines Experiences Unusually Cold Weather
Several parts of the Philippines have experienced unusually cold weather, primarily due to the prevailing Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Amihan. In La Trinidad, Benguet, a temperature of 7.5 degrees Celsius was recorded, marking the lowest in the entire country for the 2025-2026 Amihan season. Baguio City also saw a significant drop, with temperatures falling to 9 degrees Celsius early Saturday morning, down from 13 degrees Celsius the previous day, making it the coldest day of the year for the city. Other regions like Abucay, Bataan, and Tanay, Rizal recorded temperatures of 16.2 degrees Celsius, while Metro Manila, particularly Quezon City, registered 19.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning.
Crop Damage and Continued Cold Forecast
In Kibungan, Benguet, thick frost covered vegetable crops in areas like Masala and Madaymen barangays due to the cold temperatures, which dropped to 8 degrees Celsius during the early morning. The severe cold caused substantial damage, rendering many crops unusable. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that the cold temperatures are likely to persist for several more days, raising concerns among farmers about potential further losses to their vegetable produce.
