Philippine Supreme Court Disbars Lawyer for Misogynistic Remarks, Emphasizes Dignified Conduct
Lawyer Disbarment Background
The Philippine Supreme Court previously disbarred lawyer Larry Gadon for his misogynistic and offensive remarks against a journalist. Gadon lost his legal license in 2023 after hurling insults and hate speech at journalist Raissa Robles. The Supreme Court clearly stated that these actions violated the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA).
CPRA Violations and Supreme Court's Warning
CPRA Canon II, Section 3, prohibits lawyers from committing any form of violence or harassment, and from being involved in gender-based harassment or discrimination. Additionally, Canon II, Section 4, prohibits the use of abusive or offensive language, whether written or spoken. The Supreme Court found Gadon's conduct to be in violation of these provisions. The Court warned all lawyers to avoid scandalous behavior, both in public and private, and to use dignified, gender-fair language, emphasizing that words have meaning and consequences.
