68% of Filipinos Support Disclosure of China's Illegal Activities in West Philippine Sea
Filipinos Support Transparency on China's Actions in WPS
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) expressed satisfaction with the results of a Pulse Asia Research survey, which indicates strong public support for the government's continued disclosure of China's illegal and coercive actions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). The survey, conducted from February 27 to March 2, polled 1,200 respondents nationwide.
Specifically, 68% of respondents stated that the Philippines should continue disclosing China's coercive actions against Philippine vessels and fishermen, especially as the country hosts ASEAN this year. In contrast, 28% said it should not, and 4% were undecided. Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea concerns, noted that the survey confirms the government's correct policy direction against perceived aggressive bullying.
AFP to Continue WPS Patrols Amid Fuel Crisis
Admiral Tarriela emphasized that transparency is not provocation but rather the most effective tool for shining a light on aggressive bullies. Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, affirmed that the AFP would continue its operations in the WPS despite government austerity measures due to the fuel product crisis. He stated that critical activities in the defense and security sector are a mandate that must be fulfilled regardless of fuel costs.
