Trump's Iran Military Operation: Echoes of Past Middle East Interventions

Donald Trump, the President of the United States (who took office in January 2025), has announced that the US military will begin 'major combat operations' in Iran. This statement has sparked fears across the Middle East that history may be repeating itself, reminiscent of past US interventions aimed at 'regime change' in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. Over the past two decades, two US presidents have promised 'regime change' in the region through military intervention, only for these efforts to result in unforeseen chaos and violence. In 2003, former President George W. Bush also launched military operations in Iraq, ostensibly to disarm the country.

Case Studies of Past 'Regime Change': Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya

Afghanistan was invaded by the US after the 9/11 attacks, with the goal of dismantling Al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban regime. This 'Forever War' lasted two decades, costing over $2 trillion and claiming the lives of tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and over 2,000 American soldiers. Ultimately, the Taliban returned to power 20 years later. The invasion of Iraq led to the fall of Saddam Hussein, but tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis were killed in the initial occupation and subsequent insurgency, with many imprisoned and tortured. This created conditions for a violent civil war that eventually led to the growth of ISIS. In Libya, a NATO-led intervention and relentless bombing campaign in 2011 resulted in the killing of Moammar Gadhafi, but the country descended into civil war, with tens of thousands killed and many more becoming refugees. Today, Libya remains split between two rival centers of governance and mired in instability.

The Perils of 'Regime Change' and Middle East Concerns

These historical examples demonstrate that pursuing 'regime change' through military force carries tremendous cost and risk, often backfiring. While US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asserts that this is not 2003 and not a repeat of 'endless nation building,' many in the Middle East worry about the unintended consequences of the US and Israel's war in Iran. The certainty that destroying an existing order will bring stability remains elusive.
