Overseas Direct Purchase Toddler Tricycles: Safety 'Red Flag'
Test results from the Korea Consumer Agency have revealed that some toddler tricycles distributed via overseas direct purchase and purchasing agent services do not meet domestic safety standards. In an overturning test, simulating a child onboard, products were found to easily tip backward even at inclinations of 12-13 degrees, lower than the domestic standard of 15 degrees. This suggests a serious threat to child safety. Furthermore, while some products emphasize user convenience with a push handle for caregivers, similar to a stroller, their unstable structure was analyzed to significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
Serious Detection of Excessive Harmful Substances… Threatens Child Health
Even more concerning is the fact that large quantities of harmful substances were detected in the toddler tricycles. Of the eight products tested, two were found to contain phthalate plasticizers and lead far exceeding domestic safety standards. Specifically, phthalate plasticizers were detected at up to 115 times the permissible limit in some products, and lead was found at more than 10 times the limit in the handles and bell decoration parts. Phthalate plasticizers are known to cause reproductive and liver toxicity, while lead is a representative harmful heavy metal that can lead to impaired intellectual development, anemia, and muscle weakness in children. The detection of these substances in parts that children directly touch, such as handles, could directly impact children's health, thus requiring extreme caution.
Urgent Need to Address KC Certification Blind Spot… Consumer Caution Advised
The main reason such substandard products are distributed is due to a blind spot in the KC Certification system. In the case of overseas direct purchase products, the KC certification requirement is waived when individuals directly purchase them from overseas shopping malls and bring them into Korea. However, products sold through purchasing agent services are considered domestic sales and are thus required to obtain KC certification. This investigation revealed that four products were sold without certification, confirming violations of the Special Act on the Safety of Children's Products. The Korea Consumer Agency recommended blocking the distribution and halting the sale of these products, and their sales pages have since been removed. Consumers are urged to always verify KC certification when purchasing overseas direct purchase products to ensure they select safe items.
