Iran's 'Will to Block Hormuz'; Trump Emphasizes Nuclear Deterrence Over Oil Price Profits
Iran's Will to Block Hormuz and President Trump's Stance
Mojtaba, the son of Iran's Supreme Leader, has expressed his country's sustained intention to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that while the U.S. benefits greatly from rising international oil prices, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is more crucial. He described Iran as a 'nation of terror and hatred,' emphasizing that Iran is currently paying a heavy price. President Trump asserted that 'military operations against Iran' are proceeding successfully.
Divergent Views within U.S. Administration and Public Opinion Trends
However, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright expressed a differing view from President Trump, stating that the U.S. Navy is not yet prepared to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. He added that U.S. military resources are focused on destroying Iran's war-fighting capabilities and its ability to threaten neighboring countries, and the escort of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz will commence once additional resources are secured. Meanwhile, a Washington Post poll revealed that public opinion largely favored stopping attacks on Iran (42% in favor of stopping vs. 34% in favor of continuing), but among Republican supporters and independents, the percentage favoring continued military operations rose by double digits, indicating a consolidation of Trump's support base.
