UN Security Council: US, China, Russia Exchange Barbs Over Iran Sanctions Committee Operations
UN Security Council Sees Clashes Over Iran Sanctions Committee Operations
On the 12th local time, the UN Security Council held a meeting to discuss the operational issues of the 1737 Committee, which oversees Iran sanctions. As the presiding nation, the United States expressed support for the committee's activities and proceeded with a vote, with a majority of countries indicating their approval. However, China and Russia cast dissenting votes against the meeting's proceedings, arguing that the 'snapback' mechanism, which automatically restores sanctions against Iran, had not been activated. They raised procedural issues in opposing the meeting, but the meeting ultimately went ahead.
US, China, Russia Exchange Accusations Over Iran Policy
Michael Alt, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, accused Russia and China of not wanting the committee to continue protecting their ally, Iran. He emphasized that the United States would strive to prevent Iran from holding the world hostage with its missile, drone, and nuclear programs, adding that any re-imposed sanctions would not be arbitrary but strictly limited to addressing Iran's threats. In contrast, Fu Cong, China's Ambassador to the UN, pointed out that the United States' unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal had triggered Iran's nuclear crisis, condemning the U.S. as a 'provocateur.' He added that the U.S.'s actions violated international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. The Russian ambassador also criticized the United States for fueling exaggerated fears.
Western nations stated their position that the re-imposition of sanctions is justified, asserting that Iran has failed to address concerns regarding its nuclear weapons.
