Slovak PM Fico Calls for Kallas's Removal
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called for the replacement of Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, stating that she has become an "insignificant figure" on the global stage. Speaking to students, Fico criticized that the European Union faces a "big problem" as global powers disregard Brussels on major international issues, leaving EU leaders without consultation on critical matters.
Fico cited the 'Iran-Israel conflict' and the 'Venezuela situation' as examples, noting that neither Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, nor Kaja Kallas were consulted. He further argued that Washington treats the EU "as if it doesn't exist," preferring bilateral negotiations over dialogue with Brussels. Fico emphasized that the EU should consider replacing Kallas with someone who "carries more weight in international relations."
Ongoing Criticism of EU Leadership
This is not the first time Fico has called for Kallas's ousting. Earlier this year, he likened the EU to a "massage parlor," suggesting that its problems could only be fixed with "new leadership." He explicitly stated that the bloc cannot be led by individuals like Kaja Kallas, with whom "decisive global players do not meet and do not consult seriously."
Fico has been a long-standing critic of Brussels' policies, particularly regarding energy and sanctions against Russia. Reports this month indicated growing discontent within the EU over Kallas's handling of international issues, with Politico reporting a "collision course" between von der Leyen and Kallas following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran. An EU official suggested that von der Leyen's team was content "to sideline Kallas."
