Korea's First International Underwater Art Competition Held in Daejeon
The MFI International Mermaid & Underwater Dance Competition was successfully held for the first time in Korea at the Daejeon Expo Aquarium. Performers, including a golden mermaid, drew applause from the audience with graceful movements and expressive facial acting, reminiscent of Joy from the movie 'Inside Out'. They delivered stunning performances, including underwater acrobatic moves and artistic use of air bubbles, providing a deeply moving experience.
58 Athletes from 7 Nations Participate, Proving Underwater Art's Potential
This competition saw 58 athletes from seven countries, including South Korea, China, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. Participants ranged from 9-year-old children to professional adult performers, showcasing their skills in various categories such as underwater ballet and underwater dance. Ellen Lam, President of the International Mermaid Federation, stated that professional international competitions began in 2021, and this marks the first time it has been held in Korea. Eta from Taiwan, a street dance teacher, expressed her ambition to bring the dynamism of street dance to underwater art. The Daejeon Expo Aquarium proudly offered its main tank and well-equipped sound facilities as the stage, enhancing the significance of the event. This event served as an important opportunity to demonstrate the potential for underwater art to expand into a new performance genre and highlight the diverse possibilities of underwater content.
