West Asia Conflict: Current Status and Impact on Indian Nationals
India's Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced the casualties among Indian nationals in a regular briefing on the West Asia conflict. It has been confirmed that three Indian nationals have died and one is missing to date, all of whom were crew members on merchant vessels navigating the region. The Indian government strongly condemned any attacks on ships. For approximately 9,000 Indians (including students) residing in Iran, the Indian Embassy in Tehran is providing assistance for commercial flights and border crossings via Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Indian Government's Response and Safety Measures
Spokesperson Jaiswal emphasized that the situation in the Persian Gulf region is being continuously monitored, and the safety of all Indian vessels is actively being tracked. To repatriate the remains of the deceased, the Indian Embassies in Oman and Iraq, along with the Consulate General in Dubai, are cooperating with local authorities. Furthermore, the Indian Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, is providing all necessary assistance to the survivors. The injured number around 20, with many having recovered and returned home, but some still receiving hospital treatment.
Economic Impact and Energy Policy
In preparation for potential energy instability due to the conflict, the Indian government has moved to activate alternative fuel options. To prevent hoarding and black marketing, 48,000 tons of kerosene will be supplied to state governments. The Minister of External Affairs spoke with the Indonesian Foreign Minister, exchanging views on the West Asia conflict situation and discussing bilateral cooperation.
