On the night of Thursday, March 12, 2026, a massive fire broke out on at least two vessels, believed to be oil tankers, off the coast near Iraq's Port of Faw. Videos showed enormous flames soaring skyward, illuminating the surrounding sea. The fire is suspected to have resulted from a vessel attack, with scenes capturing the flames intensifying accompanied by explosion sounds.
Emergency Crew Rescue Operation Launched
Following the fire, nearby vessels were dispatched to the scene and launched an emergency rescue operation. Videos showed crew members aboard orange lifeboats being transferred to another rescue vessel using a crane. The rescued crew appeared exhausted but seemed to have been safely evacuated without major injuries. They rested and recovered in a temporary shelter.
