US KC-135 Refueling Tanker Crashes in Iraq
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that a KC-135 military refueling tanker crashed in western Iraq on Thursday, approximately 2 PM local time. Four of the six crew members on board were killed in the incident. CENTCOM officials stated that the crash was not the result of hostile fire, as claimed by an Iran-affiliated group in western Iraq, nor was it due to friendly fire.
Investigation Underway to Determine Cause
At the time of the crash, the US aircraft had received permission to operate in western Iraq from Iraqi and Kurdish officials. A massive investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the plane crash and identify measures to prevent future incidents. The Donald Trump administration acknowledged that in the current "war," there is an expectation that some US forces may lose their lives or become seriously injured as a result.
