Pentagon Grants Exceptions to Anthropic AI Ban for National Security Missions
Pentagon Approves Exceptions to Anthropic AI Ban
The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that it will continue to permit the use of AI tools from the artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic in certain exceptional cases, despite its earlier plan for a six-month phased cessation of their use. According to Reuters, a Pentagon internal memo dated March 6 stipulated that exceptions could be granted under special circumstances, specifically for 'operations essential for national security.' This directive was included in a document signed by Kirsten Davis, a senior defense intelligence official. Pentagon departments requesting an exception must submit a comprehensive risk mitigation plan for approval and will only be considered when no viable alternatives exist.
Military Applications of Anthropic AI and Challenges to a Ban
Anthropic's AI is also used in Project Maven, a key system for the U.S. military. This AI system analyzes video and images transmitted from drones and surveillance satellites to automate target identification for military analysts. The technology has been utilized in various military operations, including conflicts involving Iran. Legal and technical experts point out that it may be difficult to fully implement a comprehensive ban on Anthropic AI. Government contract lawyers suggested that many suppliers might struggle to demonstrate the complete removal of Anthropic technology and also raised the possibility that open-source code might contain Anthropic components. The memo came after weeks of internal Pentagon discussions regarding the use of AI for military purposes. Previously, Secretary of Defense Pete Heggset declared Anthropic a supply chain risk, and in response, Anthropic filed a lawsuit to prevent the DoD's ban.
