Iran's Attacks on US Military Facilities in West Asia Intensify

According to recent assessments, the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran has resulted in extensive damage to US military facilities across West Asia. An analysis by The New York Times indicates that at least 17 US military bases have been damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks since the war began on February 28. Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan Air Base, Kuwait's Ali Al Salem Air Base and Camp Buehring, and Qatar's Al Udeid Air Base—the largest US military facility in the region—were reportedly targeted early in the attacks.

US Casualties and Significant Financial Losses

Iran's attacks have resulted in US military casualties and significant financial losses. On March 1, a drone attack at Kuwait's Shuaiba Port killed six US soldiers, with an additional US soldier dying the same day in an attack on another US base in Saudi Arabia, bringing the total fatalities to seven. Financial damage is also substantial. An attack on Bahrain's US 5th Fleet Headquarters caused an estimated $200 million in damage. The radar sensor of a THAAD missile defense system deployed near Jordan's Muwaqfaq Salti Air Base and the AN/FPS-132 radar system in Qatar's Umm Dahal were also reportedly damaged. The THAAD radar alone is valued at $500 million, and the AN/FPS-132 radar system is a high-value asset exceeding $1.1 billion. Storage facilities at the Al Ruwais complex in the United Arab Emirates were also hit.

Ongoing Tensions and Potential for Escalation

Satellite image analysis revealed widespread damage across various facilities, including buildings, equipment, and communications infrastructure. The scale and precision of Iran's retaliatory strikes suggest that Tehran has made extensive preparations for a potential confrontation. With neither the United States nor Iran showing signs of backing down, analysts warn that these clashes will continue to incur substantial military and financial costs for the US military.
