Ho Chi Minh City Pilots AI Education from Elementary School to Boost Future Competencies
AI Era: Strengthening Digital Competencies from Elementary School
In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it is essential to cultivate digital competencies in students from an early age to avoid over-reliance on technological changes and to seize new opportunities. Aligned with this trend, Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City will implement a pilot AI education content program in approximately 170 general schools, from elementary to high school, starting in March. This initiative will serve as foundational data for the Ministry of Education and Training to develop appropriate implementation plans for integration into the general curriculum for each academic year in the future.
Ho Chi Minh City's AI Education Pilot: Implementation and Goals
Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of Ho Chi Minh City's Department of Education and Training, stated that the purpose of introducing AI education is to contribute to the formation and development of learners' core competencies, provide foundational knowledge and applied skills, and enable them to use AI safely and responsibly in their learning and daily lives. Educational institutions can implement AI education in various ways, such as integrating it into subjects, specific topic studies, advanced learning, or club activities, taking into account the conditions of staff, facilities, and students.
Meanwhile, journalists' observations indicate that elementary school students are already using AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for reviewing math and Vietnamese language assignments or as homework assistants. In light of this situation, educators emphasize that for education to be sustainable, students must learn not just how to use AI, but also how to understand its underlying principles.
