Turkish Parliament Speaker Criticizes UN's Ineffectiveness: 'Unable to Resolve Conflicts or Hold Criminals Accountable'
UN's Ineffectiveness and Collapse of World System Institutions
Numan Kurtulmus, Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, strongly criticized the role of the United Nations during a conference in Helsinki, Finland, on June 3. Kurtulmus asserted that the institutions of the world system have collapsed, and that the UN, an organization tasked with preventing conflicts and to whose founding documents all nations adhere wholeheartedly, is merely an office in New York. He emphasized the UN's inability to resolve any conflict or stop any aggression.
Highlighting the UN's 'Helplessness'
Kurtulmus further stated that the United Nations is in a 'state of helplessness,' unable to tell any criminal 'you are guilty.' He had previously mentioned at a meeting in Turkey that the UN is no different from a cafe in New York. This reflects a perception that the UN's influence and functionality in resolving international disputes and prosecuting criminals have been severely diminished.
