Chief Executive John Lee has arrived in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, marking the start of his official visit to Central Asia. The delegation includes high-ranking officials such as Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau, along with about 70 business representatives from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Lee emphasized the vast potential for cooperation between Hong Kong and Central Asian countries, stating that the visit aims to sign numerous memorandums of understanding and launch various collaborative projects.
Exploring Cooperation in Mining, Agriculture, and Other Sectors
Peter K. K. S. Lam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), noted that Kazakhstan has shown a very positive response to the visit. He highlighted significant opportunities for cooperation between Hong Kong, the mainland, and Kazakhstan, including a Hong Kong-listed company already engaged in mining operations in Kazakhstan. The delegation includes representatives from the mining and agricultural sectors, with Lam stressing Kazakhstan's rich potential in these industries. He also pointed out that Hong Kong's capital markets can support Kazakhstan's development, with hotel investment identified as another area for collaboration.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the appointment of internationally renowned clinical medical scientist Li Keng-chuen as the founding dean of its new medical school. Dean Li outlined three key objectives: improving the quality of medical services, reducing costs, and ensuring timely access to care. He emphasized the necessity of revolutionary reforms to achieve these goals, which also align with the vision for Hong Kong's third medical school. He aims to cultivate new doctors with scientific knowledge and an innovative spirit to contribute not only to Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area but also to the entire China and the world.
Hospital Authority Introduces 'Smart Pharmacy System' for Enhanced Efficiency
The Hospital Authority (HA) has been actively developing smart hospitals in recent years, introducing a 'Smart Pharmacy System' at the North District General Out-patient Clinic to enhance pharmacy service efficiency. This system utilizes autonomous mobile robots (AMR) to replace manual medication retrieval, allowing pharmacists to focus on frontline patient services. This initiative aims to shorten patient waiting times and minimize medication errors. The HA plans to expand this system to other hospitals and will introduce self-service medication retrieval machines by the end of the year for certain medications.
