Lebanese PM Denounces Israeli 'Scorched-Earth Policy,' Calls for Ceasefire & Negotiations
Lebanese PM Criticizes Israeli 'Scorched-Earth Policy' and Assesses Situation
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stated on May 30 in Beirut that Israel's 'scorched-earth policy,' collective punishment, and the expropriation of villages and towns will not achieve security or stability. Instead, he warned, these actions will deepen the divide with the Lebanese people. Salam mentioned that he met with the President this morning to assess the precarious situation Lebanon is going through, especially in light of the dangerous and unprecedented Israeli escalation during the last few days.
Intensified Political and Diplomatic Efforts for Negotiations
Salam emphasized the necessity of intensifying political and diplomatic efforts to reach a quick, effective, and stable ceasefire. He affirmed that Lebanon and its people have decided, with full awareness and responsibility, to pursue the most appropriate option for protection under these circumstances: the option of negotiations. While acknowledging that negotiations are not guaranteed to succeed, he noted that it is the least expensive way for the country and its people compared to other options today.
