Dr. Timnit Gebru Discusses Dual Nature of AI Development: 'Machine God' vs. 'Machine Devil'
Believers in the 'Machine God' of AI Development
Dr. Timnit Gebru, founder and executive director of The Distributed AI Research Institute, discussed two extreme beliefs surrounding AI development. On one hand, there are 'true believers' who envision uploading human minds to AI to achieve immortality and colonize the cosmos. They argue that AI will become a 'machine God' that solves all problems, necessitating the allocation of all resources to its development. This perspective reflects a technological optimism that sees AI as humanity's ultimate savior.
Warnings of the 'Machine Devil' and National Competition
Conversely, Dr. Gebru points to another group that warns of AI's dangers, suggesting it could devolve into a 'machine devil.' They contend that if AI becomes uncontrollable or is misused, it could lead to severe catastrophes. Interestingly, these individuals sometimes argue, 'We don't want anyone else to build the machine devil; therefore, we should ensure that we build the machine God.' This logic is akin to the saying, 'The best thing to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,' fueling national competition in AI technology. Dr. Gebru criticizes this argument for overlooking the ethical and societal implications of AI development.
