World's First Fully Farmed Eel Goes on Sale to Public
'Fully Farmed Eel' Public Sale Begins
A store in Tsukiji, Tokyo, began public sales of 'fully farmed eels' on May 29. This marks the world's first instance of artificially raised eels, hatched from eggs, being sold directly to the general public. Priced at 4,500 yen per eel, only 45 packs were available on the day, attracting a large crowd of customers and media personnel even before opening. One customer expressed, "I feel like I've gotten my hands on something historical," adding, "I hope it becomes more accessible for everyone and spreads worldwide."
Production Costs and Future Plans
According to Yamada Suisan, the company that farmed the eels, the production cost for fully farmed eels is approximately 2.5 times higher than traditional eel farming methods, which rely on wild glass eels. However, Yamada Suisan plans to lower prices by increasing production in the future. The company aims to expand its current 12 tanks to 57 tanks and raise 100,000 juvenile eels by 2028. This initiative seeks to secure a sustainable eel supply, reduce environmental impact, and offer the product at a more reasonable price to consumers.
