US Airstrikes in Strait of Hormuz, Iran Shoots Down Drone Amid Peace Talks Threat
US Airstrikes and Iran's Response
Amidst the final stages of peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, military clashes erupted as the US launched airstrikes on parts of southern Iran, and Iran shot down a US drone. A spokesperson for the US Central Command, Tim Hawkins, stated that the airstrikes were a self-defense measure to protect US forces from threats posed by the Iranian military. Targets included a surface-to-air missile base near the Strait of Hormuz and two Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels attempting to lay mines. In response, Iran announced the next day that it had shot down a US MQ-9 drone that had violated Iranian airspace, warning of a firm response to any US aggression.
Threat to Peace Talks and International Concern
These military clashes are expected to pose a serious threat to the ongoing peace negotiations between the United States and Iran. Both nations were in the final stages of negotiating a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to declare the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, cease hostilities, and conduct nuclear negotiations for 60 days thereafter. The New York Times pointed out that these attacks occurred just as the Iranian negotiating team arrived in Qatar for talks, risking the undoing of a fragile potential agreement. Professor Samir Puri of King's College London warned that "fighting while talking is quite common in negotiations, but the differences in positions between the two countries are too great, making such clashes extremely dangerous for the situation." The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urged both parties in a regular briefing to fulfill their ceasefire commitments and resolve disputes through peaceful means.
