Samsung Electronics labor and management reach 'bonus pay deal,' averting 18-day strike
Samsung Electronics Labor and Management Approve Bonus Deal
Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics have approved a bonus pay deal for 2026, averting a massive 18-day strike. Two unions representing the world's largest memory chipmaker announced that 74% of over 62,000 workers who cast their votes backed the deal. Following the news, Samsung shares surged by approximately 7% in morning trade.
Concerns Over Widening Bonus Disparities Among Affiliates
The government-mediated agreement brought relief across South Korea, as Samsung accounts for roughly a quarter of the country's exports. However, the deal also exacerbates deep disparities in fortunes among workers within the conglomerate.
It mainly benefits staff in the memory chip division, which has seen profits soar due to colossal global investments in AI. Some of these workers are set to receive bonuses of around $416,000 this year. In contrast, workers in Samsung's other chip units will receive less but still substantial bonuses, while employees in its consumer electronics divisions are set to receive very little by comparison.
