Trump Announces Imminent Deal to End Iran War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz
Discussions on Ending Iran War and Reopening Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on May 23 (local time) that an agreement to permanently end the war with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz has been 'largely negotiated.' President Trump stated that this agreement 'will be announced in the near future,' though there was no immediate response from Iran. On his website, he mentioned having 'very good phone calls' with leaders from Persian Gulf nations and U.S. allies in the Middle East. Participants in these calls included the heads of state from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain.
Negotiation Details and Middle East Diplomacy
President Trump also added that he had a 'very successful' individual call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He emphasized, "The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently under discussion and will be announced soon," and "In addition to many other elements of the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened." Prior to Trump's statement, mediators conducting high-level talks in Tehran indicated that they were close to an agreement to extend the ceasefire for another 60 days and establish a framework for discussing Iran's nuclear program. Pakistani and Qatari negotiators met with Iranian representatives last week and have been in close contact with U.S. envoy Wyckoff, according to sources briefed on the talks.
