Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as Director of National Intelligence Citing Husband's Cancer
DNI Tulsi Gabbard Announces Resignation
Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) under U.S. President Donald Trump, announced her resignation effective June 30th. In a statement, she cited her husband Abraham's diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer as the reason for stepping down to support him. Gabbard expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her during her year and a half as DNI, stating she could not in good conscience ask her husband to face this battle alone while she continued in her demanding role.
Background of Resignation and White House Stance
However, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Gabbard had been forced out by the White House. Conversely, White House spokesperson David Ingle stated on X that Gabbard was stepping aside in light of her husband's diagnosis. President Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that "Tulsi Gabbard has done an incredible job, and we will miss her," and announced that Aaron Lukas, the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, would serve as Acting Director. Previously, President Trump had hinted at differences with Gabbard on their approach to Iran, and in April, sources told Reuters that Gabbard could lose her role in a broader cabinet shake-up.
