Trump's China Visit: Limited Progress on 'Iran War' and Taiwan Issues
Trump's China Visit and Meetings with Xi Jinping
Donald Trump, the U.S. President, visited China from the 13th to the 15th and received a grand welcome from President Xi Jinping. However, it is assessed that little significant support was gained from President Xi Jinping regarding the Iran war response and the political situation within the U.S., with the situation largely unchanged from his departure. During their two-day summit in Beijing, both leaders projected an atmosphere of friendship and respect. President Trump praised China as a 'beautiful country' and called President Xi Jinping a 'great leader,' while President Xi Jinping reciprocated with a guard of honor, flag-waving children, a gift of rose seeds, and toasts to health.
Taiwan Issue and Lack of Concrete Outcomes
With the war surrounding Iran fueling global inflation and raising concerns about economic repercussions, tensions over Taiwan are also escalating. In this context, some analysts suggest that the mere projection of a friendly atmosphere and stability might have been the greatest achievement. However, concrete outcomes were scarce, indicating that President Trump's preparations for the visit were rushed and chaotic due to his focus on the Iran war and domestic issues. On his return journey, President Trump told reporters that he had made no promises to President Xi Jinping regarding Taiwan and only stated that a $14 billion (approximately 2.22 trillion KRW) arms sale to Taiwan would be 'decided soon.' He also recounted that when asked by President Xi Jinping if the U.S. would defend Taiwan in an emergency, he replied, 'I will not talk about that matter.'
