Trump Calls Iran War Coverage 'Virtual Treason'
Trump Criticizes Iran War Coverage as 'Treasonous'
On the 12th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump, while on a trip to China, posted on social media, criticizing reports that Iran is 'doing well' militarily in its war with the United States as 'treasonous.' President Trump asserted that such reports were "so false and, in the sense that they are ridiculous statements, virtually treasonous." He added that the media was aiding and abetting the enemy, giving Iran false hope that should not exist.
Strong Rhetoric Against Media and Demand for Judicial Intervention
President Trump has previously used the term 'treason' in reference to reports on the war with Iran, but not specifically targeting journalists as he did this time. He has previously demanded that the Department of Justice issue subpoenas to identify the sources of journalists reporting on the Iran conflict. Furthermore, according to officials, President Trump reportedly handed an acting Attorney General Branch a stack of printed articles with 'Treason' written on a sticky note during a White House meeting.
