Chess Club in Gaza City Offers Calm Amidst Fragile Truce
Gaza Chess Club Provides Respite
A new chess club in Gaza City is offering residents a rare sense of calm amidst a fragile truce. The club was founded by certified player and student, Raghad Adas, despite difficult conditions. Adas explained that finding chess pieces in the market was very difficult, and she couldn't find enough to meet the club's needs. Some people brought their own boards, but not all were suitable for training. These difficulties were primarily due to the lack of imported chessboards.
Encouraging Women's Participation and Mental Acuity
Adas also hopes to encourage more women to participate in the club. As a woman, she wants to make her voice heard and be a role model or an example for other women to make decisions about their lives and break free from the patriarchal power experienced in society. Amer abu Taha, a nurse, shared that after finishing his shift, he would go and play chess at night or in the morning. He believes this keeps him mentally active and ready for anything. Amer described the difficulty of continuing to play during displacement, noting that obtaining a board was challenging, and sometimes lost pieces had to be replaced with stones or other objects.
