Mexico President Reconsiders Early School Holiday Plan Amid Outcry
Controversial School Year Shortening Plan
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reportedly reconsidered a controversial plan to cut more than a month off the current school year. The confusion began on Thursday when Education Minister Mario Delgado announced that summer holidays would now begin on June 5, nearly six weeks earlier than the original July 15 end date. Delgado cited a dual crisis of record-breaking heat and the upcoming FIFA World Cup as reasons for the sudden modification, noting that the proposal would only apply to 90% of students in public schools, with private institutions currently exempt.
Parental and Teacher Backlash
The announcement was met with immediate backlash from the National Union of Parent Associations of Mexico, which argued that children's education should not be sacrificed for a sporting spectacle. Parents pointed out that while temperatures have hit a staggering 45 degrees Celsius, such heat is typical for the season and usually breaks once the June rains arrive. Additionally, Mexico’s powerful teachers' union last week also threatened to strike during the World Cup's opening match, having long demanded higher pay and changes to the law governing teachers' pensions.
