Large Forest Fire Ignites Near Chernobyl Exclusion Zone After Drone Crash
Extensive Forest Fire in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone
Ukrainian authorities announced that a large forest fire broke out in the Chernobyl exclusion zone on May 8, 2026. The blaze was reportedly sparked by a drone crash the day prior. According to the Chernobyl Nature Reserve, the fire has engulfed an area of approximately 1,100 hectares. Authorities assured that radiation levels at the site were within "normal limits." However, it remains unclear whether the drone in question was Russian or a misfired Ukrainian UAV.
Firefighting Efforts and Past Incidents
Firefighters are currently engaged in efforts to contain the spread of the blaze. Kyiv stated that emergency services are still actively working to control the fire. In the past, Kyiv has routinely accused Moscow of recklessly targeting its nuclear sites, including Chernobyl. The area surrounding Chernobyl has been largely deserted since the catastrophic nuclear meltdown in 1986, often described as the worst accident in the nuclear power industry, due to high levels of radioactivity, restricting public access.
