Dozens Killed in Central Mali Attacks

Al-Qaeda-linked insurgents attacked two villages in central Mali, killing around 50 people, including members of pro-government self-defense forces and civilians. These attacks are reported to be among the deadliest since the Al-Qaeda-linked group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) teamed up with the Tuareg-dominated rebel group Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) for a coordinated assault across the West African country in late April. The assailants struck two localities in the Mopti region, with a resident reporting that unidentified armed men had burst in, opening fire and ransacking the village. The exact number of civilians killed remains unclear.

Malian Army Responds to Insurgent Reorganization

The Malian army spokesperson, Major Djibril Maiga, stated that the current security situation shows the threat is still present, with attempts by terrorist groups to reorganize. He emphasized that the military, through aerial surveillance by drones and aircraft as well as strikes, is disrupting their maneuvers. JNIM had announced last week it would attempt to impose a blockade on the capital Bamako. Maiga said the insurgents were focusing on the roads leading to Kayes and Kita, disrupting travel to western Mali, but that other roads, including to Segou in central Mali, were passable. In northern Mali, where fighters seized the town of Kidal and the strategic base of Tesalit, the military is repositioning certain units as part of its response.
