AI Offers Neuroscience Prediction Without Understanding, Deepening 'Prediction and Understanding' Divide
AI Enters Neuroscience with 'Prediction Without Understanding'
Artificial intelligence (AI) is introducing a new paradigm in neuroscience: 'prediction without understanding.' Just as astronomy progressed by predicting observed phenomena through the concept of epicycles, AI is offering a similar approach to neuroscience. This contrasts with traditional scientific methods where prediction and understanding were closely linked. For instance, Alan Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley achieved both prediction and explanation through equations describing action potentials, but AI is separating these relationships.
AlphaFold Case Highlights AI's Limitations and Potential
This characteristic of AI is clearly demonstrated in the AlphaFold case. AlphaFold shows extraordinary accuracy in predicting protein structures, but it does not provide an explanatory model that humans can intuitively internalize or reason from. In other words, AlphaFold replaces the step where understanding would have happened, rather than aiding human understanding. Neuroscience is expected to follow a similar path with transformer architectures behind models like Claude, raising questions about the very nature of scientific understanding.
