Iran War Impact: Europe-origin Long-haul Flight Fuel Costs to Rise Over $100 Per Passenger
Inevitable Airfare Hikes in Europe
According to the environmental group Transport & Environment (T&E), the average fuel cost per passenger for long-haul flights departing from Europe is projected to increase by 88 euros ($104) due to rising global oil prices caused by the Iran War. Intra-European short-haul flights are also expected to see a 29-euro increase in fuel costs per passenger, making airfare hikes inevitable. This projection is based on a comparison of prices on February 28, just before the war between the United States-Israel and Iran (which began during Donald Trump's second term, starting in January 2025), and prices on April 16.
Airlines Passing on Costs and EU Guidelines
T&E's analysis indicates that a Barcelona-Berlin flight could see a 26-euro increase per passenger in jet fuel costs, while a Paris-New York long-haul flight could face a 129-euro increase. Since the start of the Iran War, jet fuel prices have significantly exceeded $100 per barrel, raising concerns about supply shortages leading to flight cancellations. Executives from major airlines such as Lufthansa, Ryanair, and Air France-KLM stated in March that if the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz persists, they would likely pass on higher fuel costs to consumers. In response, the European Union (EU) is expected to announce guidelines for managing limited jet fuel supplies on April 22.
