Anthropic's New AI 'Claude Mythos' Raises Global Banking System Threat Concerns
AI 'Claude Mythos' and its Security Threat
Anthropic, a U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company, has unveiled its latest large AI model, 'Claude Mythos,' causing alarm in the international financial community. Claude Mythos is reportedly capable of autonomously identifying numerous previously undiscovered security vulnerabilities in mainstream software systems and developing corresponding attack methods. This has prompted high-ranking international financial officials to warn of a significant threat to the global banking system.
International Financial Community's Concerns and Response
This week, at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, Claude Mythos was a central topic of discussion. Finance ministers, central bank governors, and regulatory officials from various countries expressed concerns about the powerful AI model's potential to compromise the security of the financial system. Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland stated that 'the severity of the issue is such that all finance ministers are taking it seriously,' while Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized it is 'a very serious challenge for all of us and a reminder of how quickly developments are moving in the AI space.' The Bank of England is already assessing the cybersecurity risks that Claude Mythos could pose to the financial system through scenario analysis and simulations.
The Dual Nature of AI and the Need for Global Cooperation
Claude Mythos has reportedly identified 'thousands' of vulnerabilities in common software programs, including major operating systems and web browsers. Some of these date back 27 years or remained undetected by automated testing tools. Anthropic stated that while Claude Mythos is not specifically trained for cybersecurity, its powerful autonomous coding and reasoning capabilities enable it to discover vulnerabilities and develop attack methods. The company acknowledged that while this capability can enhance cyber defenses, it could also be exploited by attackers. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted the current lack of sufficient capacity to protect the international monetary system from large-scale cyber risks, urging for global cooperation to establish necessary regulatory safeguards for financial stability in the age of AI.
