Ministry of Culture Completes 'AI Culture Policy Division'
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) has completed staffing for its AI Culture Policy Division, the first department within its headquarters dedicated to artificial intelligence and other technology-related tasks. On April 17, the MCST appointed Go Young-jin as the division head, finalizing the team which also includes two directors and two administrative officers. This division is set to prioritize the preparation of the AI-based Content Industry Promotion Act.
Background and Role of the AI Content Industry Promotion Act
The AI Culture Policy Division will be responsible for establishing AI culture strategies, promoting the AI Content Industry Promotion Act, participating in government-wide consultative bodies like the National AI Strategy Committee, and overseeing AI projects across content, copyright, tourism, and sports sectors. The MCST has been preparing this legislation in response to the profound impact of AI technology on the content industry, concerns regarding creators' copyrights and job security, and the need to strengthen AI ethical responsibility. This move stems from the recognition that the existing Framework Act on Artificial Intelligence alone is insufficient to promote the content industry and address its potential drawbacks.
