Israel Executes Major Airstrikes on Lebanon

Israel carried out extensive airstrikes on Lebanon this Wednesday, marking its most intense attacks since the conflict with Hezbollah erupted last month. The Israeli military reported targeting over a hundred Hezbollah command centers and military sites across Beirut, the Beka'a Valley, and Southern Lebanon. According to Lebanon's Health Ministry, these strikes have killed dozens and wounded hundreds.

Controversy Over Ceasefire Scope and Devastation

The airstrikes occurred shortly after a U.S.-Iran ceasefire came into effect. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated overnight that this ceasefire did not apply to Lebanon. This position was echoed by White House Spokesperson Caroline Levitt, who affirmed that Lebanon is not part of the ceasefire. However, this contradicted statements made by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The Israeli military acknowledged that most of its strikes on Wednesday were in civilian-populated areas, despite having issued warnings for some parts of Southern Beirut and Southern Lebanon hours earlier.

War Casualties and Displacement

Since March 2nd, when Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Tehran, Israel's air and ground campaign across Lebanon has killed over 1,500 people. Israel has since issued evacuation orders covering approximately 15% of Lebanese territory, primarily in the south and the suburbs south of Beirut. Lebanese authorities report that more than 1.2 million people have been displaced as a result.
