Beneath the bustling boulevards of Paris, 20 meters underground, lies the Paris Catacombs, an empire of silence. Isabelle Knafou, the director of the Paris Catacombs, emphasized the immense number of deceased interred—millions, though the exact count is unknown—and the critical importance of preserving this unique site.
Modernization and Reopening
Faced with the ravages of time and humidity, the Paris Catacombs underwent significant renovation. Camille Guérémy, Managing Director of Artemis Architectes, stated that all the work, including improvements to technical installations, ventilation, lighting, and electricity, had to be completed within just five months, under very specific access and evacuation conditions. The entire team, including masons and electricians, worked underground together. Certain sections of femurs and skulls have undergone meticulous restoration to bring back the full impact of the site's macabre architecture. This colossal effort marks a true renaissance for the Catacombs, which typically welcome around 600,000 visitors a year. The revitalized site is scheduled to reopen to the public on April 8, promising its 2,000 daily visitors an unprecedented sensory journey into the heart of this unique sanctuary.
